Wow I haven’t updated here for a long time! I have been way too busy with work, but I’m trying to squeeze in some blog time now I have a spare half an hour. Need to remember everything I’ve done in the last month!
It has been super busy and I feel really settled in now that I have loads to be getting on with. Here is a quick run down of things I’ve been doing the past few weeks:
- Attending a local history event which was an introduction to researching your family tree. It was really useful for me to attend it because I am a bit of a novice when it comes to genealogy. We had a librarian from the Cheshire Record Office in the library to discuss different ways to start researching your family tree. Since then I’ve dealt with LOTS of family history enquiries and even done a bit of my own.
- Rhyme time! We’ve recently re-jigged our rhyme time so that it is a story & rhyme time working in collaboration with our local children’s centres. I did the first session with a children’s centre worker and it was a great success. So many cute babies!
- School visits. Both organising and running! I have had a few bookings for school visits from local primary schools following up my promotion of them, which was very pleasing. Today I also held my own school visit with a group of Year 11s, on research skills and Harvard referencing system. I was thrown in at the deep end really, as the librarian who had organised it was off. But I think it went well and sometimes I prefer doing things when I’m thrown in at the deep end. Good experience!
- Read-a-long book group. We have a staff forum with a book talk section on the Intranet, for all council staff, and I’ve been setting up a staff read-a-long. Instead of reading the book and then just discussing it, we’re reading a long together and discussing it at 7 chapter intervals. The take up for it has been really good and we’re fully booked up now. We’re reading The Brutal Art by Jesse Kellerman, which will be interesting for me because it’s the kind of book I’d never normally read.
- And finally, working on my dissertation. With everything else that I’ve been doing, this has been on the back burner slightly but every now and again I get the chance to work on it.
I am officially exhausted today because we’ve been a bit short on staff so I’ve been rushing around and only got about a 10 minute lunch and have been on the desk for most of the day, or doing the visit. I am really loving the challenges that I’m being given though.
